Sunday nights used to be when the week landed on both of us at once. One of us knew the practice times, the other knew about the dentist, and neither of us had the whole picture.

Now we start every week with a one-page brief. An AI helper drafts it from our calendars in about ten minutes, and we read it together. Here's the template and the prompt, free to copy.

The short answer: paste your week's commitments into any chat assistant along with the prompt below. It fills in the template. You check it against your real calendar, then share it with your partner.

The AI prompt that fills it in

❝

"Here are our family's commitments for the week from both calendars. Fill in this weekly brief template: one line per day, who's covering drop-offs and pickups, any overlaps or tight spots, anything to buy or prep ahead, and up to two decisions for the two of us. Mark anything unclear with a question mark. Use 'Kid 1' and 'Kid 2', not names. Don't add anything that isn't in my list. Keep it to one page."

Paste the template right after the prompt.

How we use it on Sunday

  1. Pull the week from both of our calendars, plus any dates from school emails. Our guide to turning school emails into calendar events with AI covers that part.

  2. Run the prompt.

  3. Read the brief together, ideally over coffee, in under ten minutes.

  4. Settle the "decisions for us" section on the spot.

❝

Your check: Hold the brief up against your real calendars before you rely on it. If the AI moved a time, invented an event, or guessed who's covering something, fix it. You know your week. The AI only knows what you pasted.

Try this tonight

Run the prompt on this coming week, even if it's only Monday. A partial week is a fine first test. Notice what it gets right and what you had to fix.

Make it a routine

Once it's working, some assistants can run it on a schedule and send you a draft every Sunday. We do this with a "Family Chief" helper. See how we run our household on Grok Bot. If your assistant doesn't run scheduled routines, a recurring Sunday reminder to paste and run works just as well.

Where it falls short

  • It only knows what you give it. A missing calendar means a missing brief.

  • It can't make value calls, like which activity to skip. That's what the "decisions for us" section is for.

Privacy basics

Use initials or "Kid 1." Leave out school names, teams, and addresses. Don't paste medical details, just "appointment, 3:00."

Where this is headed

Pasting your week in by hand is on purpose at first. It's how you learn what the AI gets right and what it misses. It's a direction, not a promise, but here's the ladder:

  • Today: you paste your commitments, run the prompt, and check the brief against your real calendars.

  • Next: once it's reliably accurate, it drafts the brief on its own from your calendars every Sunday, and you review it in a minute.

  • North star: the brief arrives Sunday already filled in from your shared calendar, your School label, and the week's meal plan. The two of you just read it and make the decisions.

Our north star: both of us start every week with the same picture, in ten minutes or less. The decisions, and anything that sends, buys, pays, or shares, stay with us.

FAQ

What is a family weekly brief? A one-page summary of the week ahead: who's where, who's driving, conflicts, prep, and decisions. It's built so both adults start the week with the same picture.

Do I need a special app? No. Any chat assistant and the template above will work.

How long does it take? About ten minutes to draft and five to review together.

Can it work for co-parents in two households? Yes. Paste both schedules and add a "handoffs" line to the template.

Is it safe to paste my calendar into AI? Share the minimum. Event titles with initials and times are enough. Skip names, locations, and anything medical.
